Cloakroom Weddings

In the last 12 months we’ve seen an explosion  in the number of men choosing The Cloakroom to dress them for one of the most important days of their lives.

The pressure of finding a unique and personal look for the day can often be a daunting one, but we like to think that our team  are here to guide men through the big decisions that go into having a suit made for their wedding day.  The ability to choose the exact fabric texture for their suit, exact colour and style of shirt, length and width of tie, gives every man the individuality needed for his wedding party.

It’s always very rewarding to see the photos and to see so many guys looking amazing on the big day.

Here’s a few from the last year or so:

New arrivals at The Cloakroom

Our eagerly awaited next drop of Cloakroom denim isn’t far away and we expect to have these on the shelf by early next week. Once again we’ll have a dark blue and an indigo on offer. The dark blue being a dressier jean with a dark finish on the stitch, while the indigo is more casual with a copper stitch.

Also arriving very soon (this week) will be our first shipment of Carminas, which are on a plane from Spain as we speak. These shoes are beautifully crafted and sure to get all the shoe enthusiasts out there very excited. As one of only 2 stockists in Australia we expect there to be a lot of interest, so if you are interested please don’t delay.

Here’s a sneak…

And we’ll have shell cordovan available by request

New beginnings at The Cloakroom

Another year has begun and is off to a flyer already. Here at the shop it’s business as usual as we settle in for what looks to be a very exciting 2012. We have lots happening and some exciting announcements to make in the next fe weeks so please stay tuned.

At the Brisbane shop we’re in the final throws of giving the store a facelift – not that we needed to, but it’s always nice to start the year with a fresh outlook and surroundings.  As well as accommodating clients with some spacious new change rooms we have a  new shoe area and also a dedicated Pistols at Dawn section in the store. This will house a more extensive range of our ready to wear pieces and include a seasonal collection of shirts, jackets, pants, shorts and accessories.

February also means a new season of fabrics (both shirting and suiting) and last week we had our first new bunches arrive from Dormeuil. Though we carry on a bit about how fantastic the Dormeuil cloth is they have put together some very special fabrics this season and if you’re in need of a new suit or jacket we have some fantastic options.`

For the moment our Sydney operation remains closed but we will begin our regular trunk shoes in 2 weeks time. We will be taking appointments and holding fittings Mon-Wed every 3 to 4 weeks in Sydney at a city location (to be confirmed). Stay tuned for more details.

We hope the year is off to a great start for you all and we look forward to seeing you soon.

2011 at The Cloakroom

2011 has been a massive year.

This year in Brisbane we’ve battled floods and a fire to get our new store open and running. We’ve expanded our team to 4 and have had the opportunity to work with some great clients. Our suiting business has really grown, and it’s been very encouraging to see the men of Brisbane embrace a more sophisticated way of dressing. We’ve very fortunate to have an amazing array of clients, and this year it’s been really fantastic to see so many new faces through the shop.

In Sydney we’ve created a strong following in the Surry Hills neighbourhood where we see a few more rock stars than bankers. Josh has had some very interesting guys in the shop in 2011 including magazine editors and film directors. But as the year comes to an end we’ve been forced to close our Sydney store to accommodate the owners who are redeveloping the Surry Hills building that we’ve called home.

It is also at this juncture that Josh and I have agreed to move forward without him in the business. Josh and I have forged a strong working relationship and brand focus in the last 5yrs and without having had such a dynamic person like Josh involved in the business we wouldn’t be where we are now. It’s been a great journey so far, and I’m sure Josh will still continue to be part of the Cloakroom in some form.

As this chapter comes to an end we’re presented with an opportunity to take the business in a fresh direction in the new year. And although our Surry Hills operation will close for the moment we still intend to keep our Cloakroom banner flying in the Sydney market.

With so many great clients (who have become friends) over the last 2 yrs we fully hope to offer our Cloakroom product in a new way to our Sydney clientele. Starting in the new year we will offer monthly trunk shows in Sydney showcasing new fabrics and ideas as we continue to offer our fully tailored service and distinctive Cloakroom product.

We’d like to thank everyone for their support this year and to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday season. We look forward to seeing you in 2012.

The Cloakroom Brisbane

Misunderstood Suede

For most of us suede shoes can be something we balk at, and mostly because we just aren’t sure how they’ll wear, or  whether they will last as long as regular leather. Usually this doubt arises mainly from trepidation about how they’ll handle wet weather.

In actual fact one of the great things about suede is that it will get better with age. A well made pair of suedes should last a long time, and with a simple amount of care you’ll see that it isn’t as hard as you might think. Obviously using shoe trees after each wear and putting your shoes on in the morning with a shoehorn will help keep them in shape, but when it comes to cleaning it gets a little more tricky.

Our resident shoe guru Ben recommends a suede brush as an essential tool to have at home. This usually has coarse boar (not steel like old brushes) bristles one side for keeping the suede pile from lying flat and crepe or rubber bristles on the reverse for lifting away anything that’s sticky or set in.

This video from Leffot in NYC shows just how robust suede is. These guys are serious about shoes and stock some great brands.

Hong Kong

2 weeks ago, Mitch and I were lucky enough to get out of the Brisbane store for a quick hit and run 4 day trip to HK. It’s a particularly nice time of year to visit, with the temps hovering in the mid 20s and without the usual humid stickiness.

We got the chance to catch up with our suit team to spend some time working on a few changes we’re currently making to our cut and to tweak a few construction details. We also got to check in with our shirt team, who do an amazing job of delivering us a great product day in day out.

Having a fulltime Cloakroom staff member on the ground in HK is  a great asset to our business. And having a dedicated tour guide for the entire time meant we were chauffeured to all the spots only a local would know.

Here’s a snippet…

The bamboo scaffolding become a fascination of Mitch’s. It certainly is impressive what they can do.

Most of the time was spent in Kowloon, but we did get over to HK Island to among other places the IFC2 behemoth with stores like Kiton and Loro Piana, as well as checking in with the guys at The Armoury for a scotch.

New Season Pistols at Dawn

For Summer we’ve designed a new range of pieces for our ready-to-wear line, Pistols at Dawn. This season we’ve played with some interesting fabrics in the quest to provide some comfortable options for the warmer months.

The Cloakroom Brisbane now open!

After the drama of last week it is great to have our Brisbane store back open again.

It took 3 days of cleaning, scrubbing and painting from the team, but the effort was worth it, with the shop almost back to its old self.

A big thanks to everyone for their messages of support during this time, it is very much appreciated.

The Cloakroom Brisbane – out of action

We have been saddened this week to have to close our Brisbane store due to damage from a fire.

The shop itself has not been signicantly damaged, but we have had to re-order all our ready to wear stock and client orders as they have been affected by smoke and soot.

We appreciate your patience as we spend the next few days emptying the shop and cleaning all the ash and dust.

We hope to be open again by this Friday Oct 14th. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and messages of support during this difficult time, it is very much appreciated.
